Brady beats ex-champion Edwards for shot at title fight with Muhammad

Image
American Sean Brady has scored the biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) win of his career with a superb submission over former welterweight champion Leon Edwards to silence the crowd at London’s O2 Arena, catapulting himself into contention for a title fight with compatriot Belal Muhammad. Brady dominated before a guillotine choke forced the 33-year-old to tap out at 1:39 in the fourth round against the British fighter at the UFC Fight Night on Saturday. Brady, with an 18-1 win-loss record in MMA, was overcome with emotion as he accepted the fight with Edwards (22-4 record) on February 19, according to MMAFighting.com, which he said was a special day in his personal life. “I literally took this fight the day I got out of the hospital with my wife [and] with our newborn baby,” the 32-year-old said following the win. “I knew this was a fight [where] I could do that [kind of performance] in. I can do that against anybody in the [welterweight] division. I just showed that against one of ...

Jordan defeat Palestine in AFC World Cup qualifiers to pressure South Korea

Image
Jordan beat the Palestinian national team 3-1 to consolidate the second qualification spot for the 2026 World Cup in Group B of the Asian qualifiers. Yazan Al Arab opened the scoring in the third minute at Amman International Stadium in Jordan’s capital, with Abdallah Nasib doubling the advantage only eight minutes later. Tamer Seyam pulled one back for Palestine just after the half-hour mark but Mousa Al Ta’mari completed the scoring and sealed the match for Jordan in the third minute of injury time in the first period. The top two from each of the three six-team groups in the third round of Asian qualifying advance to the World Cup, while the third- and fourth-place teams advance to another stage to compete for two more places. The result leaves winless Palestine, who qualified for the knockout stages of the Asian Cup for the first time in 2024, bottom of the table with three points from seven games. They still have the chance to reach fourth-place which is currently held by Om...

Blue Ghost lander captures stunning sunset shots on the moon before falling silent

Image
A private lunar lander has captured the first high-definition sunset pictures from the moon. Firefly Aerospace and NASA released the stunning photos Tuesday, taken before the Blue Ghost lander fell silent over the weekend. One shot included Venus in the distance. Firefly’s Blue Ghost landed on the moon on March 2, the first private spacecraft to touch down upright and perform its entire mission. It kept taking pictures and collecting science data five hours into the lunar night before it died for lack of solar energy. NASA's Joel Kearns said Blue Ghost's series of sunset shots are the first high-resolution images from Earth's neighbor. Scientists will need to analyze them in depth, he noted, before making any determination about the horizon glow captured in at least one of the photos and whether it was created by levitating dust. That theory was put forth more than a half-century ago by Apollo 17's Gene Cernan, the last astronaut to walk on the moon “What we've g...

ADL confirms that CEO Jonathan Greenblatt backed out of Israeli antisemitism conference

Image
As participants in an antisemitism conference organized by the Israeli government backed out over the course of several days, citing the presence of far-right politicians, an unexplained change unfolded on the event’s website. The CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt , disappeared from both the page showcasing participants and from the agenda for the conference, organized by Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli. But as of Tuesday morning, neither the U.S. antisemitism watchdog group nor Greenblatt had commented publicly on why. On Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the group issued a statement that filled in some of the gaps. “In light of some of the recently announced participants at the Israeli government’s antisemitism conference, Jonathan decided last week that he would no longer be attending the event, and he notified the Israeli government about the decision after the weekend,” the spokesperson wrote. The statement did not specify which of th...

Flick sends strong message to Gavi after Spain snub

Image
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has offered his support to Gavi after the midfielder was left out of latest Spain squad. Gavi’s omission is not a complete surprise, as he’s only just back from a long injury lay-off, and Flick says the midfielder should not worry at all about it. “Of course I talk to him, to everyone. What can I tell you about Gavi, he’s coming off a very serious injury. At the moment, he is not the first after the injury. The second difficult situation is to come back, but he’s one of our best players. “Our midfield is very good. He will play for many years at this magnificent club and will be one of the stars. He will improve a lot, I am convinced. “He’s very focused and happy to be here. He has hopes of being in the World Cup and I am convinced that he will be.” Luis de la Fuente’s decision to go without Gavi does, of course, bring some benefits as it means the midfielder gets the chance to have a break ahead of a crucial stage of the season.

Justine Bateman Says Trump and Musk Should Use $100 Million of DOGE Savings to Start American Film Fund

Image
It might not roll off the tongue as easily as MAGA, but filmmaker Justine Bateman is calling on President Trump to help make it happen. Her proposal: Take a slice of the money the president and Elon Musk are cutting from the federal bureaucracy via the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and use it to finance a handful of feature films each year. The new venture could be dubbed The American Film Fund, or TAFF, Bateman said. And the veteran director and producer, who first rose to fame while starring on "Family Ties" from 1982 to 1989, said she knows just the person to run TAFF -- herself. She raised the idea to TheWrap in an interview this week while discussing her upcoming Credo 23 Film Festival, which showcases movies that were created without artificial intelligence technology. "Let's start small — give me $100 million or $50 million, and I am going to get you five to seven fantastic, 'Oh my God, America's back' kind of films," Bateman sa...

Mikel Arteta explains why he snubbed Raheem Sterling at Man Utd

Image
Mikel Arteta has admitted he didn't think Raheem Sterling was the right player to come on and change the game during Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday. The Gunners' faint Premier League title hopes were all but extinguished at Old Trafford as more dropped points handed Liverpool a 15-point lead at the top of the table. Bruno Fernandes' first half free-kick gave United a slender lead at the interval and, although Declan Rice drew Arsenal level in the second half, they weren't able to go on and win the game despite applying pressure. Arteta was still missing a number of key players for the trip to Manchester, though he was able to call upon Gabriel Martinelli with just over half an hour remaining following a five-week spell out injured. The Spaniard made just three of his five permitted substitutions and surprisingly turned to full-back Kieran Tierney, who is leaving the club in the summer to re-join Celtic on a free transfer, as Arsenal searched ...

Rashford returns to Champions League in Aston Villa's 3-1 win at Club Brugge

Image
Marcus Rashford resumed his Champions League career Tuesday, starting in Aston Villa's 3-1 win at Club Brugge in the first leg of their last-16 tie. Rashford did not score his first goal with his new team but put on a strong first-half display, making himself available and showing his pace and great technique on the wing. After Leon Bailey put Villa ahead, Rashford had an excellent chance to double Villa’s lead on the break in the 10th minute from a tight angle but his effort was blocked by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Rashford was replaced by Marco Asensio in the 64th minute. It was Rashford's first Champions League match since November 2023, when he was sent off for Manchester United against FC Copenhagen. Rashford joined Villa in February on loan from United, where he had fallen out with manager Ruben Amorim. He had not played for United since Dec. 12 amid Amorim’s concerns about Rashford’s commitment to training. The 27-year-old forward's loan runs to the end of the se...
